Leeway by Munetris

See what really changed between two versions of a business process

Paste the same business process from two environments, or two versions from one. Leeway ignores indentation, attribute order and comments, and tells you which operations, services, rules and assigns differ, and which blocks moved.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored, and the page's security policy blocks every network request.

Example

Rename the two sides to match where the versions come from, for example AT and PROD.

Changes

Line by line

Both sides are shown in one normalised layout, so only real differences remain. Click a change above to jump to it.

Comparing more than one process?

We are building a service that compares every business process across DEV, AT and PROD on a schedule and tells you when an environment drifts. Mail us if you want to hear when it is ready.

Questions

What does Leeway ignore?

Indentation and line breaks, the order of attributes, the XML declaration, <x/> against <x></x>, and by default comments and spacing inside XPath, so number(Index) + 1 equals number(Index)+1. Spacing inside string literals always counts, and so does the space around a minus sign, because a-b is a name in XPath while a - b is a subtraction.

How does it decide what changed?

It matches the two processes activity by activity: rules by name, operations and other activities by name, assigns by their to, onFault handlers by code, cases by rule. A matched activity whose service, message, condition or value differs is reported as changed. An activity found on one side only is added or removed, and an unchanged block that sits somewhere else is reported as moved.

Where do I get the BPML from each environment?

In the dashboard of each environment, open the business process definition and view or export the BPML of the version you want, usually the default version. A Graphical Process Modeler export or a file from your source control works just as well.

What is the fingerprint?

A SHA-256 hash of the normalised process, computed with the options you have set. Two versions with the same fingerprint are the same business process, however they are formatted. Keep it in a change record to show which version you reviewed.

Who makes this?

Leeway is built in the Netherlands by Munetris, an integration consultancy with 30 years of integration, B2B and EDI work for banks and enterprises. It is one of the free Munetris tools for teams running B2B gateways, along with the BPML viewer that draws a process and checks its structure.
